How to better handle/design encounters with a group which sucks at combat

Hello fellow Dungeon Masters :), I am a new DM who only got into doing this 2 Months ago as me and my friends started to play 5e. We started with a little two session homebrew adventure where I introduced some partys and villains. After that I lead into the starter adventure to learn how a preconstructed campaign plays. First and foremost we have lot of fun everytime so I am doing some things right I guess but a big problem is the combat/encounters. I gotta be honest combat is allways a little awkward cause they get slaughtered by most medium encounters and I mean 4/4 people down with 0 hitpoints which isin't supposed to happen with a medium encounter. I use the system where you have certain exp treshholds(easy/med/hard/deadly) depending on the levels of your party (I hope everyone knows what I mean). On Easy they most of the time faceroll through the encounter but as I get to medium or sometimes hard I either have to let all of them die or fudge many die rolls which doesnt feel right :/ ... So its faceroll or drop dead 95% of the times and that is neither rewarding for me or the party...In response I tend to go heavier on exploration and roleplaying in my last sessions and very few encounters just because they have the most fun then. This is only a temporary solution so I would love some advice for encounter designing or handling encounters with a party like mine who love the game but are not very good at combat and foremost what can I do better to make our encounters more enjoyable ?I hope I explained my problem good enough happy for any answers :) via /r/DMAcademy http://ift.tt/2rKznCJ
