TIL that despite being logarithmic and technically going to infinity, the Richter scale is inaccurate for magnitudes 7+, and can rank two earthquakes that are off by a factor of 30 as the same magnitude, leading to lots of "magnitude 7" earthquakes, when actual energy released varies greatly.
