
So I bought a 95 Yamaha fzr 600 a couple years ago as my first bike to ride and tinker with (pops out of second gear, got it dirt cheap). It stopped running one day last fall when I ran out of fuel. No problem, I just stored it until earlier this year to look at getting it running. Well my goodness I had no idea so many things could go so wrong all at the same time. Starter relay was toast, got a cheap one for $10 from a local shop that happened to have a used one sitting around. Fully charged battery tested at 10v so bought a new one. Fuel pump was kaput so bought a cheap aftermarket one. Replaced the spark plugs just because I have no idea when they were last done. Took apart the carbs and cleaned/tuned them since I knew the bike was struggling for power once it got above 9k rpm. Now, all put together again it would crank and not fire. Wasn't getting fuel. Some trouble shooting and it turns out the brand new fuel pump had a pinched wire that was shorting internally. A quick solder on the work bench and test had it thrumming strong. Flow from the filter seemed adequate but I gently cleaned it with some brake cleaner and air anyways; the fuel flowed much better after. Still wouldn't run. If I manually activated the fuel pump and filled the carbs the bike would run great! So more trouble shooting revealed the fuel relay wasn't working; but only over the contacts for the fuel pump. So I figured instead of a new relay I'd just slice the wire to the fuel pump in on the wire going into the relay, just bypass the relay. Everything else on the relay is working appropriately and the killswotch and key both have to be turned on to put power to the fuel pump. First try saw the 7.5a fuse blow. I ohmed out the fuel pump and noticed it was about double the original pumps specifications. Knowing it would take more current I put in a 10a fuse and blew that too. Put in a 15a ... and it runs! So, I know the wiring is good and there is no dead-short. But it's drawing almost double the current, but still within the wires capabilities so there's no concern of burning out the wires. Is it possible that the relay is on its last bit of life and drawing extra power? What other concerns have I perhaps overlooked by bypassing the relay this way?TL;DR: bypassed the power to the fuel pump around the relay, still turns off with run switch, circuit is drawing extra current... bike runs great but what can go wrong? via /r/motorcycles http://ift.tt/2sWaC6V
