[DISCUSSION] Does electric guitar need a hero?

Saw this article from NPR and I thought it was interesting. On one hand, it seems like a bit of a call to essentially bail out Gibson and Fender, but it did get the wheels turning.Personally, I think that there are plenty of living guitar heroes to choose from at present. Depending on your taste, you can take your pick from Derek Trucks, John Mayer, Dan Auerbach, Annie Clark, Warren Haynes, Jack White... The list, of course goes on.I think, if anything, from a popular music standpoint, we are in the midst of a "guitar recession". This happens, sometimes. In a few years, a new guitarist or band will pop up and the press will name him/her/them the savior of rock music. But there's a chance that I'm wrong. That guitars take a back seat and become viewed not as the driving force behind rock music, so to speak, but just another tool in the arsenal. In any case, what are your thoughts? Are guitar heroes essential? Are you worried about the future of the electric guitar? What does that mean for music in general? Would it be so bad for the guitar to take a back seat? Give your thoughts. via /r/Guitar http://ift.tt/2tF7Upc
