Americans no longer trust our institutions and we cannot agree on what would have been considered non-political "facts" in the past. Are there historic corollaries and what happened next?

For example, national leadership says "crime in our inner city is at an all time high" when it's easy to get numbers for this and prove otherwise. Large numbers continue to believe the leadership. When we cannot agree on relatively simple, straightforward numbers/data, and HUGE numbers of citizens are in the thrall of a person who knows almost nothing and feels free to lie (not spin which is universal, but LIE) on the daily, what happens next? This utter lack of trust in our institutions and in due process is not existentially sustainable. Inevitably something will happen. To narrow it a bit...Situation #1: The economy starts improving significantly (due to unforeseen forces), and therefore.......Situation #2: The economy worsens (this one is not hard to imagine) and therefore .....Anyone care to use historical examples to venture an idea? via /r/AskHistorians http://ift.tt/2rLiqIj
